Former WEC featherweight champion Urijah Faber’s bantamweight debut will have to wait, as an injury has forced “The California Kid” out of WEC 50.
Faber (23-4 MMA, 8-3 WEC) announced his withdrawal from the card on his Twitter account.
Faber was scheduled to face Takeya Mizugaki (13-4-2 MMA, 2-2 WEC) at the event, and MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) has learned from sources close to the promotion that a replacement opponent will not be sought for the Japanese product.
Featuring a bantamweight title bout between current champ Dominick Cruz and top contender Joseph Benavidez, “WEC 50: Cruz vs. Benavidez” takes place Aug. 18 at The Pearl at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas. The main card airs live on Versus.
It’s currently unknown which bout will be promoted to the evening’s main card to replace the previously scheduled co-feature.
Faber, who was scheduled to fight for the first time as a 135-pounder, stated on his Twitter account that the injury happened on Monday.
Faber, who reigned as the WEC’s 145-pound champ and emerged as the organization’s biggest star during a 13-fight win streak from 2005 to 2008, since has gone 2-3 in his past five fights. He lost his belt to Mike Brown at WEC 36, dropped a rematch at WEC 41, and after getting another shot at the belt, suffered a decision loss to now-champ Jose Aldo at WEC 48 in April.
Mixed in with the losses were submissions wins over Jens Pulver and Raphael Assuncao.
Faber has yet to announce a timetable for his return.

| As everyone was looking forward to the most anticipated fight card of the year: UFC 116 on Saturday night (which took place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena). But the night before the big fight card, everyone’s attention was on the Orleans Casino for the Tuff N Uff Fights, where local MMA fighters come to make their debut and have a chance to launch their careers as pro MMA fighters (like Aaron Riley and Jon Fitch).
From KO’s to TKO’s to submissions to decisions Tuff N Uff was a satisfying night, not only because it was Independence Day weekend and also because UFC 116, but because there were two 8 women tournaments in the 135 lbs division.Every fighter delivered very well and made everyone glued to the non-stop action in the ring.

The Waverly Renaissance Hotel in Atlanta, GA played venue to the state’s first ever Combat Sports Expo which was sponsored by Georgiafighters.com and 790 The Zone. It was reportedly the biggest MMA-themed event ever held within the Peach State and it surely did not disappoint. The show was due to present a number of vendors, seminars including MMA and BJJ among others, and a slew of amateur and pro fights. The expo was free to the general public but the grappling tournament and fights did cost money to attend. However, the price of admission did not stop many fight fans from sitting in on the action for the all-day event
The main room was organized with over 30 MMA vendors and sponsors and was free to the general public to engage in. The booths featured some local gyms, businesses, and organizations in addition to well-known establishments like the Atlanta faction of the famed Gracie-Barra school, Toe 2 Toe mma apparel, and “Fight!” magazine to name a few. The X3 Sports gym table showcased Strikeforce fighter, Mike Whitehead. I asked the Heavyweight fighter how he was enjoying Atlanta and he tentatively responded, “It’s nice, but it’s not exactly like Vegas.” He went on to add “no word on an opponent just yet, I’m waiting to hear back from Strikeforce.” It just so happens that the Xtreme Couture product was also in town training with the up-and-coming Atlanta-based X3 Sports gym (more on them later).
Besides the outside festivities, the first ever south eastern Poderoso grappling tournament was due to take place in the Grand Ballroom 1. On my way to the room I notice a Georgiafighters.com booth promoting the upcoming Wild Bills Fight Night 26 on April 17th in Duluth, GA. The fight card is supposedly going to feature embattled Welterweight, War Machine (he’ll be fighting Aaron “Tex” Johnson) for its main attraction, but in light of his recent brush with the law, I felt encouraged to inquire about his fight status. The booth attendee handing out fliers informed me he is due to fulfill fight obligations regardless of his legal situations at the moment.

Georges St-Pierre (22-2) had long been at the helm of the UFC Welterweight, and after a dominating performance over Dan Hardy (23-7) at UFC 111 what more can the Canadian champion accomplish in his division? That’s not too say that there are no more challenges to his throne, but some of the best fighters that are currently in contention have already been beaten by GSP; and by no means were they close fights, he handily defeated them—made some of them look like amateurs. So in deciding the next opponent for “Rush,” we will analyze each fighter that is currently in title contention. One-to-two of these fighters on the list may get their shot this year:

Fortunately with this story of a fighter battling internal demons ends with him still alive. Court has been through a couple of traumatic events that led to being pronounced clinically dead. Starting early in his childhood, Court was lost in an Amusement Park for 10 hours, where he hid behind a hotdog stand. The event was so traumatic that Court can’t stand the smell of condiments or even put them on his food. When he became a young adult, he started on the war path of drugs, trying cocaine and heroin. Even after his kiss with death after drinking and using drugs and then getting behind the wheel, Court ran a red light, was struck from behind, while his skin was shredded apart from the asphalt.

I got the best phone call in the world tonight! Mike Easton from UWC called and we had a GREAT conversation. Mike is definitely one of the most down to Earth big name fighters that I have ever met. He is truly a gem! Mike and his sister are opening a gym within the coming months for those in the DMV to come and learn self defense, stay in shape, or even to train like Mike and fight in the cage!
